I seem to be having problems uploading my design to the ipad. I am guessing it is a wifi issue. Is there a way to circumvent this entirely ? eg either connect the ipad directly to the PC ??? Open to suggestions.

No, but if you put the files from the project _Files folder on an FTP web server somewhere, that bypasses any local network issues you might have (firewalls etc) - and you can download the project from the internet
