creating buttons

This is probable a dumb question but,,, how do you go about creating a button graphic. Are there programs? what is the process? if anyone can point me in the right direction would be great

I usually do this by hand in Photoshop and then save the output as a .png file with a transparent background. You can usually find a suitable blank button to start with using google and then add the custom icon/text in Photoshop before saving. Don't forget to save the final project as a native Photoshop file in case you need to edit it in the future, the .png file will loose all layer information.
